Introducing: The Gooray!

An Open Species Created by DoodleJuni

Goopy Eels!

Goorays are anthropomorphic and semi-amorphous beings made of a goo-like substance called "rayum," which is a unique, water-based tissue that acts as muscle and skin. These creatures share a resemblance with the moray eel, with two nares on their muzzle and a fin travelling from their head down to the tip of their long tails. They have webbed feet, clawed hands, gills on the side of their neck, and a mask-like marking around their eyes, which are usually similar to bandit masks or raccoon markings. They have an extensive ability to shape their bodies and can freely control parts of themselves remotely if separated. However, it is important to note that they cannot easily create more rayum if lost or destroyed. This species can shape their bodies so long as they do not harm internal and external organs, or any calcified parts like their teeth.

Identity and Socializing

Gooray headfins can be configured into many different styles, and can start atop their heads or the back. Of all the parts of a gooray, the headfin is the most flexible, likely for styling and self-expression.

These creatures also always have coloured scleras and white pupils. They also have humanoid eyelids and the equivalent to eyebrows for more nuanced facial expression. Some goorays also have additional fins and features, including ear fins, which might hang down or stay upright, as shown in the examples below. It is not entirely known why some develop them and others do not. It is hypothesized that these develop due to regional differences.

This species has no strict concept of gender, and they may change sex altogether. They are born without an identifiable gender initially, but as they mature they take on the gender that feels most natural to them.Goorays are shown to develop similarly to humans in this way, with sexes ranging from male, female, andromorph, gynomorph, hermaphrodite, etc. Their sex may also change depending on social or environmental factors. They are also born without colours, which begin to appear as they socialize and form an identity. These colours rarely change once fully developed.

Strengths and Weaknesses

In terms of offense and defense they have a strong bite and can secrete a variety of chemical mixes in their saliva, teeth, and claws.Around their body are raised lumps of rayum that typically take on the same colour as their fins. It is theorized that these are reserves for self-repair, or are used to hold the mixes. They vary dramatically between Goorays, and are based primarily on diet.Below is a list of effects that their toxins can induce in non-gooray creatures:

CommonUncommonRare
ParalysisHypnosisNeurochemical Changes
WeaknessHallucinationsGender Shifting
FatigueFear/PanicGooray transformation

Goorays are usually immune to other toxins, though it has been theorized that they can temporarily disable this immunity for strategic, social, or romantic purposes.Their tails are incredibly strong and provide added agility when on land. Goorays will often show off to or scare other species by lifting themselves up with their tails as a demonstration of strength. They are alsovery fast swimmers! However, this species tends to stick out due to their colours. Their colours, similarly to tree frogs, are meant to ward off other predators, but do not allow them to be very stealthy.Their balance is also reduced on land, as rayum has less friction than fur or skin. They tend to not fare well in extreme cold, and generally prefer warmer climates.Because they are sea creatures their eyes are well adapted to darker conditions, but bright flashes of light can blind them.

Meet the First Gooray!

Bait was the very first gooray I drew, and what led me to make a species from his design. He is a himbo who loves playing paintball, and often takes on the role of a mentor for new recruits (they always lose). He lives up in an abandoned lighthouse that he fixed up. In his spare time he likes to paint.
